We’ve all had those moments where life throws a wrench in your plans, only to hand you something completely unexpected and unforgettable in return.
A couple of days ago, I was originally supposed to be heading to Wembley Stadium for the Coldplay concert. But because of a sudden transit strike, the show was postponed. Finding myself with a completely open schedule in England, I managed to pivot toward my other massive passion: Formula 1.
Thinking back to 2019, I still remember the incredible privilege of visiting the McLaren Technology Centre. There is always something deeply humbling and special about getting to step behind the curtain of an operation that large. When the opportunity arose to visit the Red Bull Racing campus in Milton Keynes on such short notice, I was incredibly grateful to see how another world-class team brings these machines to life.
Fueling Up (A Bit Too Much)
The day started with a classic, slightly hilarious miscalculation. Red Bull’s hospitality means unlimited free cans of their signature drinks throughout the campus. I spotted some unique flavors I hadn’t seen back home and, naively thinking they might be a new non-caffeinated or decaf line, happily tried a few. By the third can, my heart rate told a very different story. I was officially amped and ready for the tour.
Our first major stop was the MK-7 building. If you’ve watched any Red Bull videos over the last decade, you’ve seen this main hall. Standing in that room surrounded by a fleet of historic championship cars is a surreal experience.
I probably spent way too much time leaning in to spot the little easter eggs tucked away inside the cockpits and analyzing the subtle aero evolutions from year to year. What surprised me most was how welcoming and relaxed the team was. On one stop, I asked about the liveries, and they actually encouraged me to feel the vinyl wraps on the cars. It is mind-blowing how perfectly they apply those wraps. On television and even standing two inches away, it looks exactly like a flawless coat of paint.
Inside the Dream Factory
The tour took an even cooler turn when we walked into the workshop areas. We got to watch the crew prepping one of the iconic RB7 cars to be shipped out for an upcoming showrun with David Coulthard. If that wasn’t enough, parked right there in the same bay was an Aston Martin Valkyrie just sitting casually. For a car lover, it felt like stepping directly into a dream.
From there, we transitioned into the manufacturing facilities where parts for the current and upcoming seasons are born. Phones are strictly forbidden here, but the level of access they granted was insane.
I am a huge nerd when it comes to 3D printing, specifically SLA resin technology. Suddenly, I found myself standing right next to industrial-grade printers, watching how they manufacture components for the highest tier of motorsport. The absolute highlight of this section was getting to chat with some of the on-site experts. I asked them a few highly technical questions about resin printing techniques and post processing that I’ve been struggling with on my own personal projects.
Instead of brushing me off, they took the time to genuinely help me troubleshoot my issues. It meant a lot to me, and it really underscored how deeply passionate everyone at Red Bull is about their craft, no matter who they are talking to.
Glimpsing the Future
Just when I thought the day couldn’t get more memorable, we walked through the active bays where the current cars sit.
I turned my head and noticed a power unit resting on a stand with a very distinct inscription: Red Bull Ford Powertrains.
I couldn’t help but ask if I was looking at the upcoming, highly anticipated secret engine. The engineers smiled and confirmed it was, and they even mentioned they are preparing to fire it up and test it in the chassis for the very first time next week. Standing that close to the future of the sport was a true pinch-me moment.
Trophies, History, and an Unexpected Detour
Before seeing the engines, we spent time in the Sir Jackie Stewart Building. Sir Jackie was one of the absolute legends I grew up reading about, and someone I’ve always held in the highest regard. Back in 2022, I had the honor of supporting his incredible charity, Race Against Dementia, during the Austin GP weekend, which is a memory I will never forget.
The lobby of the Sir Jackie building houses Red Bull’s famous, towering wall of trophies. Looking at that massive display of silverware, you can really trace the beautiful history of the team, seeing how it evolved from its roots with the Stewart family and Jaguar into the powerhouse it is today.
As the campus tour wound down, I headed back to the train station to meet up with Ian and Oz. Somehow, through a sequence of events entirely sparked by Oz, I found myself in a classic Aston Martin DB5.
But anyone who knows what happens when Oz and I get together knows that is a story for an entirely different day.
